What a pleasure to hear the mellow voice of Don Moen taking us again to a place of heartfelt expression of love for our God. Don is one of the key people God has used over the past 20+ years to help guide the church to His throne in worship. The passing of time has sharpened his spirit and tuned his ear to more clearly see and hear and lead us to the Father in a musical offering of adoration.
Hiding Place, the project's title and first track, is a great example of the quality of music and lyric that Don is still giving to the church. It is an intimate expression of our great need and dependence on him and our corresponding worship to Him for meeting that need. If the lyrics didn't capture you, the music definitely would. It has a "beckoning" feel to it... the sense of a call being issued. It draws you into the message and makes it a part of you.
I really appreciate the musical diversity we are offered. From the mellow tones of With A Thankful Heart to the minor melodies of Fresh Fire, Don takes us on a musical journey on his path of praise. I really like his use of the electric guitar in this production. He employs gritty power chords and smooth melodies that are neither overdone nor underdone... and there's a great violin solo on Hiding Place.
There are some wonderful prayers on this album, as well. Lead Me Through the Night, Break Through, Hear Us From Heaven... The titles are prayers in and of themselves. You may find yourselves using some of these in your personal prayer time as an aid to help you express your own petitions to God.
One of the real highlights of the album is Don's musical painting of John's description of the scene of worship around God's throne as described in Revelations 3 & 4. Aptly entitled Revelation Song, Don takes his musical brush to the scored canvas and gives us a glimpse of what John must have seen and heard. This song is worth the price of the album.
In Hiding Place, Don Moen is adding to the legacy of worship he is leaving the church.
