This Basics in Live Audio course teaches practical, useful tips and techniques from the ground up with the "ordinary guy/gal" in mind. It covers the technical basics; signal path, microphones, equalization, etc. But just as important it covers things that are not just technical explanations, but "real world" topics like the personality differences between musicians and technicians, or the best and most effective way to communicate to the musicians on stage from behind the console.

Things COVERED in this DVD:
  • What EVERY button and knob on YOUR console does (and doesn't do) - No more feeling like a 'deer in the headlights'.
  • Where to use certain microphones and why
  • Why are the personalities of musicians and technicians so different?
  • When and when not to use EQ? And if so, which frequencies?
  • How to make YOUR system sound better, just by following a few simple set up approaches.
Topics include Signal Path, The Console, Getting Basic Levels, Monitors, Microphones, Equalization, Musicians and Technicians, Practical Applications.

Includes a FREE BONUS RESOURCE CD-ROM full of vital information to help you reach that 'next level'. Stay organized and inspired with these useful PDF print outs which include input lists, stage plots, signal path diagrams and a whole lot more.

Also included in this package is a FREE CD-ROM GAME “Audio Engineer Challenge” which allows you, the ‘contestant’, to answer a series of questions that when answered correctly eventually reaches the golden million point question that gives you the title ‘Audio Engineer’.

 Review

Godsend (god-send) n. - an unexpected thing or event that is particularly welcome and timely, as if sent by God.

I have been in music ministry long enough to know that the issue of sound systems (and running them) can sometimes be a thorn in the side of those running a Sunday morning service. I have seen first hand the tension, and sometimes discord, that this subject can bring about. On one side you have pastors and worship leaders who are frustrated with bugs and mistakes associated with poorly run sound. On the other hand, you have the frustrated sound person who knows very little about running sound and is sorry that they ever uttered the words "I would like to volunteer anywhere that I'm needed." But in the end, everyone involved wants the same thing - great sounding live audio on Sunday morning. If you find yourself somewhat relating to the above scenario then I don't think that it would be an exaggeration to tell you that "Live Audio Basics" instructional DVD is a Godsend (see above definition).

At the heart of the "Live Audio Basics" 3-disc set is the DVD video hosted by producer and engineer Ron Davis. The DVD is packed with real world information about how to run a sound system and run it well. Not only is it informative, it's really entertaining with graphics, video clips and funny skits to help you remember the information. So if you think that learning about sound is all dry definitions and math, think again. But that's just scratching the surface of this DVD. It tackles subjects like signal path, monitors, EQ, and getting the perfect levels. It also has one of the best explanations of the mechanics of microphones that I have ever heard (this is the information that will take care of that pesky feedback). As if all that wasn't enough, Ron goes on the give insight into how sound technicians and musicians can understand each other and lots of other practical advice for becoming the best sound technicians you can be. It would be very hard to overstate the amount of detailed information that this DVD delivers. The title may include the word "basic" but believe me, you will thoroughly know the basics when you are finished.

A lot hard work and thought went into creating the "Live Audio Basics" instructional resource. The PDF print-outs included on the first CD-ROM are professional and easy to read. It would be a great idea to print these out and keep them in the sound booth for easy reference. And with the additional CD-ROM game "Audio Engineer Challenge" you will be able to test your newly acquired skills and have a lot of fun while you do it!

The days of staring at your sound equipment like a deer in the headlights are over. If knowledge is power then "Live Audio Basics" will endow you with power to change your entire sound ministry for the better.
