F.U.N. Method - Billy Christopher - DVD (DVD)

Billy Christopher has provided an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning to play the piano or keyboard. Billy's F.U.N. method (Fast Understandable Natural) presents in a concise format (48 minute DVD) the basic principles of forming and playing most of the chord structures you will encounter in music (major, minor, diminished, augmented, major 7ths, 7ths, minor 7ths, 6ths, suspended and 2nds).

Beginning with an understanding of half steps and whole steps, he has conveniently incorporated a simple numbering system to help the learner remember how to form each grouping of chords. He can have those with even minimal finger dexterity playing chords in their root position in a matter of minutes.

Probably the most encouraging aspect to the learner is the enclosed chord chart for "Amazing Grace" that Billy has you playing by the end of the lesson. Having taught piano students myself, I know how important it is to get them playing a recognizable song as soon as possible. It "hooks" them to continue the process. Simply practicing scales (which certainly has its place) doesn't do much to inspire the student. However, enabling them to play an entire song at their skill level is a huge incentive for them to continue. Billy accomplishes that goal for the student.

The learning visuals (i.e. - seeing Billy demonstrate on screen how to physically form the chords) are certainly a big help. The viewer should have no trouble reproducing on their keyboard or piano what they see on the screen.

For those of you who are pretty much restricted to scored music, this instructional video would be a great step in the direction of being able to play from a chord chart. Billy explains the formation of chords in such a way that you will be able to reproduce the chords you see indicated on a chart. If that is your desire, this would be a great place to start. Because of your musical background (you music readers!), it should even be easier for you.

If you have never played the piano, but have an interest, this training DVD would be right up your alley. If you do play the piano, this resource would be a great help in enabling you to play and explain chord formations to others.
