Don Potter

"When people move from one place to another, they will have to look through their stuff to sort out what they want to keep or what isn't worth dragging to a new home just to store again. The hardest part of leaving is facing your stuff again, especially if that stuff represents life changes. My wife and I moved at the end of 2003 back to Tennessee after several years in another land. Nashville, being the first and only place the Lord ever called us to. We have drifted away to one nice place or another now and then but the Lord has been consistent about his first call. As soon as we got here I hid away in the extra bedroom of a renal in the country. With Guitar in hand I began to process some of my feeling through instrumental music. Maybe going through some of my old stuff triggered enough emotion for me to start writing and the new but familiar environment was all I needed to get going. I knew we were here to wait on the Lord--something being busy doesn't allow. This is the music that came out of waiting and pondering and seeing some old pictures that were sent to me by a long lost relative. The song titled 'Between the Rooms' was a memory of hearing my father play with is friends in the living room of an old farm house. Some of the musicians were in the living room and some in the dining room. I found the best vantage point was between the two rooms. That way I could hear everyone, and still be close to my father."

 Review

I love instrumental music, especially instrumental worship. My soul longs for music that moves me deep inside and takes me to an intimate place with the Lord. The album "While I Wait", from Don Potter, does that.

"Jerusalem", the last cut on the album, is incredibly beautiful. My heart is stirred and shivers go down my spine when I listen to it. This must be what God feels for His city, His chosen people and for all who believe in Him as Lord and Saviour. "While I Wait", the first cut, is simple and uncluttered. Classical guitar and strings lay a gentle foundation for a strong, beautiful melody. This is the key to the success of this song.

"Close to Home" picks up the pace, setting an acoustic guitar lead against a driving Latin rhythm. While I found the rhythm instruments somewhat distracting at times, I really enjoyed the lead guitar work. "Between the Rooms" is another fast song, with a distinctly bluegrass feel. This style is somewhat out of place on the album but its significance is explained in the liner notes. . . "'Between the Rooms' was a memory of hearing my father play with is friends in the living room of an old farm house. Some of the musicians were in the living room and some in the dining room. I found the best vantage point was between the two rooms. That way I could hear everyone, and still be close to my father". Much of the album comes from reflecting on things that were, while also seeking what will be.

You will find acoustic guitar the most prominent instrument on this album, with electric guitar strategically intertwined. These are both set against various backing instruments. Don's electric guitar work is highlighted on "Axis", where he uses a sweetly overdriven tone to express this emotion-laden melody. Special effects are used very effectively to vary the melody and build energy.

The album has a gentle feel, mixing elements of jazz, soft rock and classical with some European touches. The quality of the studio production is very good. The album is suitable for both personal and corporate worship and times of quiet contemplation. Some songs could be adapted for live use.

Don Potter understands the importance of integrity and not surprisingly, his music is very real and personal. This album continues the spiritual journey he shared on his first instrumental album, Facing the Wall, where he describes his process to discern God's presence. . . "I did this by facing the wall and playing the guitar. At first I could only play a few minutes before the desire to entertain crept back in. After a year, I could play for hours and never realize it happened.". This album is your opportunity to spend time with Don and share in his spiritual journey.
