 Review

Have you ever had your senior pastor tell you that he wanted you to do a hymn for your contemporary service? He doesnt really care what hymn it is, we just need one in the set so the Christians who have been around for awhile will be able to relate. Well Im sure like me; you have been in that spot as well. You have scoured your old CDs and tapes in hopes of finding a hymn that has the power lyrically of a hymn but doesnt sound so boxed in, so square. I am here to tell you that you need look no further, at least for a while that is.

The new Hymns Project from Bob Kauflin entitled Upward is a wonderful CD. The production on CD is really outstanding. The instrumentation is very contemporary. Most of the time when I hear a compilation of hymns from someone, they sometimes have decent arrangements, but then they use vocal stylings that sound as if they were arranged in the early 1900s. One of the aspects that make this CD so pleasant and so usable for a contemporary worship leader is that the vocals on the CD sound contemporary as well. You dont have to listen past the vocals to decide if the song will work or not.

Upward begins with a rearrangement of the classic hymn, Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow. The song just soars from the very first note. The arrangement is familiar enough that all will recognize it, yet it has some interesting turns as well. One of my favorite songs on the CD is the track, A Debtor Of Mercy. It makes wonderful use of an accordion and cello in the arrangement that truly melts you emotionally and draws you into the lyric of the song. Two particularly strong songs are tracks 7, Come Now Almighty King and track 8, Your Great Name We Praise. I can envision our worship team using both of these songs for our weekend services. Come Now Almighty King has some really wonderful harmony lines for vocals. Both of these songs are filled with passion and will translate extremely well in any contemporary services. One last song worth mentioning is The Look penned by John Newton the author of the classic Amazing Grace. It is a soft, sensitive tune that portrays our Lords crucifixion and the dichotomy that Christ died because of us, yet Christ died for us. This can be a wonderful special music number for the coming Easter season that will touch many hearts. Bob Kauflin, being a fellow worship leader, has also made these songs even more usable by offering free lead sheets (which we have included in a complete downloadable songbook).

Finally Bob Kauflin offers a brief narrative on the background of each one of the hymns that tells somewhat of the heart behind the song. Even though these hymns have gone through some transformation to help them reach a more contemporary audience, Kauflin has truly maintained the integrity of the lyrical content of each song. This CD wont just get one or two listens and then end up in your CD library; it is much too moving and wonderful for that.
