I'd say the chances are slim to none that two guys by the name of Shane would get together as a Christian music duo. But it is fortunate for us that these two "Shanes" found each other. The result of their teaming up is some wonderfully written CC music and another powerful witness to the variety of the creativity God plants in His worshippers. This CD/DVD combo has three great things going for it. First, these guys have some great vocal harmony. Though they are not related, this is the kind of harmony you often find in siblings who sing together. Their voices seem to be made for each other. Note: if you plan on doing any of their songs, don't plan on doing it in the key they are written in. These guys have sky-scraper voices. In other words, they are HIGH! However, that is one of the qualities that make up their unique sound. They certainly don't sound like the BeeGees, but it was that same high quality that gave the BeeeGees their one-of-a-kind sound. These Shanes can flat out sing (that's Texan for "they sing real good").Secondly, the acoustic guitar work on this album is first rate. There is a great variety of musical style. A very contemporary sound gives way to a Jewish minor melody sort of thing... which is followed by a folksong type of feel. You also have the intimate, the powerful and driving... these guys have a little bit of everything. Their acoustic style is as distinct as their vocals. There are times they have a kind of John Mayer (vocally and acoustically) thing happening. If I had to choose one word to describe their music, it would be "exciting."The "thirdly" is for all the acoustic guitar players out there. One of the great bonuses on the DVD is a hands-on instructional segment in which Shane (take your pick... I'm still not sure which one) shows you how they get some of the unique acoustic stylings that they use, including the use of two capos at a time (well, actually one and a half capos). As a musician, I know the frustration of hearing some really great music and not being able to figure out how they got that sound! Voila! This bonus track on the DVD will show you exactly how it is done.By far, my favorite song on the album was a worshipful and passionate song by the name of "Yearn." This is a great song. You will find yourself singing it by the second time through. Sparse lyrics (almost a must for sing-able and remember-able worship songs), a nice melody and a great chorus. Once you listen to the album, I'll bet you agree this is the cream that comes to the top on An Evening with Shane and Shane. I have a feeling if you buy this album it will turn into more than just "an" evening, but rather many evenings with this great Christian music duo.Review by Danny Mullins
