"Take My Life" is the third installment in the Vineyard Voices series and offers brand new recordings of some of Scott Underwood's greatest songs, plus a few new songs as well. I must admit that I'm not exactly an authority on Scott Underwood. In fact I've known very little about him outside of the fact that he's played a major role in the history of the Vineyard music scene. However, when I listened to this CD, it became obvious to me why he has played such a major role. I've discovered that Scott Underwood is one of the most well rounded vocalist/worship songwriters, not just in the Vineyard, but in worship music as a whole.
Musically speaking, Scott Underwood has an eloquent command of the language of worship, with an obvious blues dialect. From the bluesy "You Are In Control" to the laid-back jazz influenced arrangement of "Unspoken Truth", Scott Underwood proves that stylistic creativity and worshipper accessibility can coexist in worship music. This CD is a fabulous example of how different musical styles can be tastefully integrated into a worship arrangement without turning the song into a genre-based novelty.
Even if you're not very familiar with Scott Underwood's music, you will more than likely recognize many of the songs on this CD. Songs like "Stand Back" which declares "we will stand back and let you move", or the title track "Take My Life" also know as "Holiness," which Sonic Flood helped to popularize in the late nineties. And of course, almost everyone knows "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" which Scott didn't write but he certainly makes it his own in this rendition.
The thing that most impresses me about this CD is Scott Underwood's ability to make every word of a song count. He can express an idea in two lines that would take other songwriters a whole verse to express. This ability results in focused, uncomplicated, yet deeply moving lyrics.
"Take My Life" is an eclectic blend of rock, country, blues and jazz strung together by a thread of thoughtfully crafted lyrics and melodies. As plentiful as the musical moments are on this CD, they can't eclipse the heart-felt worship behind each song. To sum up this CD in a few words, it's worshipful, it's creative, and it's well worth a listen.
