Editor's Notes: When I first read the review by our staff writer, Danny Mullins, on the Songwriting for Worship DVD, I was skeptical at how a good teaching tool could be made on a topic that is so subjectively viewed and creatively driven as songwriting. So, the review inspired me to pick up and watch the DVD myself, and I am glad I did. Dan Wilt and the resource team at Vineyard Music have done a great job making this product not just excellent, but inspiring. So now that I have read his review (below) and reviewed the DVD myself, I give a hearty "amen" to Danny's accolades below. Along with that, I am pleased to give Songwriting for Worship DVD an Editor's Choice Award as an excellent resource!

- Kim Gentes, Editor of WorshipMusic.com.

 Review

Attention Songwriters! Have you ever encountered an obstacle in the middle of the songwriting process and wondered:
"Where do I go from here?"
"Is this the right word to complete my thought?"
"Should there be an additional verse, or bridge?"
"Have I written too many lyrics or not enough?"
If those are questions, you've had then Songwriting for Worship is a Godsend for you! Songwriting for Worship - DVD is a training video produced by Vineyard Music. In it, they have dealt with most of the problematic situations we meet while crafting a song and have offered us constructive options to help us over the hump. They deal with such issues as:

  • Inspiration
  • Song development
  • Writing Lyrics that Last
  • Memorable Melodies
  • Rewriting and Co-writing

just to name a few.

The DVD includes interviews with some of the most successful writers in the Vineyard family and the UK worship leaders:

  • Brian Doerksen
  • Matt Redman
  • Kathryn Scott
  • Brenton Brown
  • Andy Park
  • Tim Hughes
I found their insight into the various processes of songwriting to be extremely practical, apply-able and inspiring. Listening to these writers I couldn't help but thinking how great it was to be able to put faces to some of the songs I have so enjoyed singing and leading. To hear Kathryn Scott recount the history of writing "Hungry" and Matt Redman's journey in writing "Heart of Worship" was not only instructive, but inspiring. You discover that they are "people" just like you and I. The processes and life situations they walk through, though diverse, are amazingly common to us all. It was impossible to come away from the video without feeling that there were numerous songs locked up inside you that God, as well as these writers, wanted to born into the worship community.

Dan Wilt does an outstanding job guiding us through this training video. Many kudos to whoever wrote the script for this project. The dialogue flows naturally from section to section without wasted words. That's a welcome relief from many training resources that seem to overwhelm us with an abundance of words! The dialogue on Songwriting for Worship is concise and extremely well articulated by Dan Wilt. He has a great speaking voice that you do not tire of listening to.

The length of the video is 45 minutes. This is not something that you will have to set aside an entire evening to view. Vineyard Music has done an excellent job packing wonderfully helpful and inspiring teaching into a 45 minute time frame. There is usually some area of weakness that we can suggest attention to, but it was difficult to find it on this project.

Brenton Brown said, "Many have said that our theology is shaped more by the songs we sing than the sermons we hear." If that is true (and it very likely is), there is a very great responsibility on those who are writing the songs we are singing. Songwriting for Worship goes a long way in helping us take that responsibility seriously.
